Les Menuires – Skiing in France at its Best
For a great holiday involving skiing, Les Menuires in the French Alps offers superb facilities that can help you get the very best out of a skiing break. If it will be your first time skiing, Les Menuires offers some truly excellent nursery slopes; if you’re a little further advanced in your skiing, it contains 12 green and 35 blue slopes; and for those that are close to becoming masters, you can pit your skills against the 24 red and 6 black runs.
Yet the resort isn’t only about skiing – it has some great fun zones as well. For example, there is the relatively new “Roc ‘n Bob” 4km-long toboggan run; it’s open to everyone and is a great way to pass some less serious time in the snow. You can also try the BK Park where you’ll find snowboarding and all sorts of freestyle possibilities.
The resort is part of the famous “Three Valleys”. It sits at 1850 metres altitude, above St Martin de Belleville at 1450 metres. A little further up the valley you’ll find Val Thorens at 2300m (which is the highest skiing station in Europe). In the adjacent valley (the slopes are linked) is the resort of Méribel at 1450 metres and in the final valley you’ll find Courchevel – also at 1850 metres. All told, you’ll have over 600 kilometres of piste to choose from.
If you’re as interested in the après-ski as in the snow itself, you’ll find a good selection of restaurants and bars in Les Menuires and St Martin – plus some relatively low-key early hours nightlife. Ideal for skiing, Les Menuires offers great accommodation both in the central areas (La Croisette) and in slightly outlying satellite areas such as Preyerand. Much of the nightlife is based around the lively La Croisette, so it may be a little noisier at night than some of the residential areas a little out of the centre.
The main centre of the resort has its origins in the 60s and 70s and, at one time, the architecture was criticised for being too modern and out of keeping with the Alpine backdrop. However, more recently it has been re-evaluated and is now just as often admired for its modernist lines. By contrast, the satellite accommodation areas have been built in the more traditional Alpine style.
When it comes to holiday resorts specifically designed for skiing, Les Menuires and the surrounding areas (including San Martin and Val Thorens) offer a fantastic opportunity to really get the most out of the sport. More than that however, Les Menuires does it with an inimitable and distinctly French flair and style.
