Ski Holiday Dos and Don’ts

Skiing, Les Menuires or anywhere else, is a great chance to get away from it all, fill your lungs with clean mountain air and build up some serious speed as you race down the piste.  But before you set off, here are a few top tips to ensure your holiday runs as smoothly as your skis across the snow!

Dos

Wear decent clothes: this really isn’t anything to do with making any fashion statements, but all about wearing clothes that will protect you from the weather.  Layers are useful when skiing Les Menuires’ slopes, and make sure you keep your head warm.

Prepare: if you’ve never skied before it’s really a good idea to take advantage of local facilities to learn beforehand.  Indoor slopes are popping up all over the place these days and it can make your trip so much more enjoyable if you arrive able to get straight into the skiing.  Les Menuires and other resorts have tuition available if you can’t learn before you get there.

Get the right fit: Make sure your equipment is the correct size.  Break your boots in before you go (you can wear them around the house) and it will help you keep out on the slopes for longer.  Old hands will be only too happy to tell you gruesome stories about the blisters that result from not breaking boots in properly.  Also, from a safety point of view, make sure your bindings are secure and that any equipment is an appropriate size for you.

Respect the rules: they aren’t there to annoy you, they’re there to make life easier for everyone.

Be polite: Give right of way to skiers below you on the hill, and make sure that you give room to those who are learning – don’t get annoyed with them, there’s only one way they’ll get better.

Don’ts

Push your limits: at least too soon or too far.  Skill on the slopes comes from gently nudging your capabilities, not smashing them.  If you bomb down the slope completely out of control you’ll be a danger to everybody else as well as yourself. Skiing Les Menuires’ fabulous slopes is much better if you know what you’re doing – being able to come to a controlled stop isn’t the refuge of cowards.

Stop where you can’t be seen: if you’ve stopped just over the brow of a hill, move to the edge, or further down.

Drink and ski: it might seem fun, but once you start drinking make sure you’ve stopped skiing.  Alcohol will make you take bigger risks and not be as aware of the temperature.  It’s plain dangerous.

Gamble with your insurance: it might seem like an extra cost, but it’s nothing compared to the cost of flying you back to your home country.  Hopefully nothing will happen during your trip, but skiing, Les Menuires or anywhere else, is inherently risky.  Make sure you’re covered.
